[German]Windows 10 will get a new prompt called Terminal. It will combine the command prompt, PowerShell, access to the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), and so on.

According to this article in the developer blog, Windows Terminal is a new, modern, fast, efficient, powerful, and productive terminal application for users of command line tools and shells such as Command Prompt, PowerShell, and WSL (see selection below).

Windows Terminal will be deployed and regularly updated in Windows 10 via Microsoft Store.

Microsoft has also heared the users’ requests, and has added Windows Terminal tab support, i.e. you can run several sessions in distinct windows and switch between these sessions using a tab.

Windows Terminal uses a GPU-accelerated DirectWrite/DirectX-based text rendering engine. This new text rendering engine displays text characters, glyphs, and symbols present in fonts on the PC. This also includes CJK ideograms, emoji, powerline symbols, symbol programming ligatures, etc. This engine also renders text much faster than the GDI engine of the previous console. The following video demonstrates the new terminal.

Windows Terminal will offer many settings and configuration options for customization. The settings are stored in a structured text file that makes it easier for users and/or tools to configure them. Terminal’s configuration mechanism allows users to create multiple “profiles” for each shell/app/tool they want to use. This includes profiles for PowerShell, Command Prompt, Ubuntu, or even SSH connections to Azure or IoT devices. These profiles can have their own combination of font styles and sizes, color schemes, background blur/transparency levels, and so on.

Windows Terminal and Windows Console are open source and the code is available in the GitHub repository. Microsoft plans to release Windows Terminal Preview builds on the Microsoft Store in summer 2019. So insiders can work with it and should give feedback. Windows Terminal 1.0 will then be available in the winter of 2019.
