[German]Microsoft has released April 25, 2017 two compatibility updates KB4020001 and KB4020002 for Windows  10 Creators Update. Details about both updates provided by Microsoft are really short.

Update KB4020001 for Windows 10 Version 1703

Update KB4020001 has a title ‘Compatibility update for upgrading to and recovering Windows 10 Version 1703: April 25, 2017’. It’s for Windows 10 Version 1703. In Microsoft Update Catalog the package is listed as Dynamic Update for Windows 10 Version 1703 for x64-based Systems (KB4020001). The 2 MB (64 Bit) package is also available via Windows Update and is quoted as a ‘Critical Update’. Microsoft wrote ‘This update makes improvements to ease the upgrade and recovery experience to Windows 10 Version 1703.’

Update KB4020002 for Windows 10 Version 1703

Update KB4020002 has the title ‘Compatibility update for upgrading to Windows 10 Version 1703: April 25, 2017’ and is also for Windows  10 Creators Update. Microsoft Update Catalog list this update as Dynamic Update for Windows 10 Version 1703 for x64-based Systems (KB4020002). This 2,4 MB update is quoted as critical and Microsoft wrote: ‘This update changes the upgrade experience to Windows 10 Version 1703.’ The update will also be available via Windows Update.

I haven’t received these two updates within my VM with Windows 10 Creators Update till yet.

BTW: These Dynamic Updates are used during upgrading or reinstall from setup wizard. Some more details may be found within the following links.

‘Digital Rights Update Tool’ strips DRM from WMA files

$

[German]Today a short tip: Microsoft provides  the ‘Digital Rights Update Tool’ for Windows 10. This tool allows to remove DRM information from WMA files.

Microsoft Windows Media Audio-Format (WMA) supports Digital Rights Protection (DRM). Many commercial available WMA files (downloaded or ripped from audio CDs) has a DRM protection. So it requires Windows Media Player (WMP) or another DRM capable player to play these WMA files. Also the Windows machine requires a valid DRM certificate. If somebody is moving to another machine, in DRM is affected. Also, WMP or Windows updates has caused serious DRM trouble. Some users are loosing the ability to play their bought WMA files. So, many users are switching over to the DRM free MP3 format.

In the days of ‘Windows as a service’ for Windows 10, it seems that WMA DRM is obsolete. So Microsoft offers the free Digital Rights Update Tool within Windows Store for Windows 10 (PC version).

The Digital Rights Update Tool removes the copy protection you added when ripping CDs to the .wma format from within Windows Media Player. Other forms of copy protection cannot be removed.

The odd thing: Unfortunately this application isn’t available for older Windows versions.

Windows 10: Insider Preview Build 16184 for PC

Microsoft has released Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 16184 for PC and Build 15208 for Windows 10 Mobile in Fast Ring for Windows Insiders.

The announcement has been made within Windows-Blog. Here’s whatt’s fixed in PC build:

  • We fixed an issue where night light could get stuck in a disabled state.

We’ve updated Start to use the improved XAML scrollbar style announced during Creators Update development.

  • We fixed an issue from recent flights where dragging an app from Start’s All apps list into the tile grid would result in Start crashing.
  • We fixed an issue for those using Windows in Japanese, where on first login after an upgrade certain apps would unexpectedly appear at the bottom of the Start’s All apps list for an hour or until being launched, instead of the normal sorted position.
  • Since the preview picture in Start Settings only previewed background and theming changes, which are already available to be previewed on their corresponding Settings pages, we’ve made the decision to remove it.
  • We’ve improved the loading performance of the Notification Settings page.
  • Some audio drivers have an “encoding Audio Processing Object” feature; this is commonly known as “Dolby Digital Live” or “DTS Connect”. This takes the output of the Windows audio engine mix, encodes it (as Dolby Digital, DTS, or some other format) and sends it out over a S/PDIF optical link for decoding by an external audio receiver. An issue was introduced which resulted in this feature no longer working, which is now fixed.
  • We fixed an issue from recent flights resulting in Photos crashing if you opened a picture from the Collection page and then pressed the back button in the title back.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in Counter Strike Global Offensive hanging or freezing during game play on the latest builds (16176+).
  • We fixed the issue where pressing F12 to open the Developer Tools in Microsoft Edge while F12 is open and focused may not return focus to the tab F12 is opened against, and vice-versa.

And here are the know issues:

    • Some Insiders have reported seeing this error “Some updates were cancelled. We’ll keep trying in case new updates become available.” in Windows Update. See this forum post for more details.
    • Double-clicking on the Windows Defender icon in the notification area does not open Windows Defender. Right-clicking on the icon and choosing open will open Windows Defender.
    • Surface 3 devices fail to update to new builds if a SD memory card is inserted. The updated drivers for the Surface 3 that fix this issue have not yet been published to Windows Update.
    • exe will crash and restart if you tap any of the apps listed in the Windows Ink Workspace’s Recent Apps section.
    • Insiders who use Simplified Chinese IMEs or the Traditional Chinese Changjie or Quick IME to input text will find that the candidate window doesn’t appear when typing into certain apps. If you press space, the first candidate will be finalized. Using the number keys will not finalize any other candidate. If the candidate you need is not the first one, for now you will have to enter your text into an app where the candidate window appears, such as Notepad, and copy it into the desired text field.
    • Navigating to Settings > Update & security > Windows Update may crash Settings app. You can simply re-open the Settings app again and it should work again.
    • The “Save” dialog appears to be broken in several desktop (Win32) apps. The team is investigating. This will break things such as Chinese IME, etc.
    • Localized apps on localized x64 Windows 10 Insider Preview builds will not work.
    • We’ve heard some reports that the Action Center isn’t opening as reliably in recent builds, and are investigating.

Windows 10: Update error 0x80072EE7

Some users are having trouble installing updates in Windows 10. Windows reports update error 0x80072EE7. What to do, to fix this issue?

I stumbled upon this issue within a (German) Microsoft answers forum post. The user bought a new Windows 10 sytem. After unpacking and running the first Windows 10 OEM install, the machine received a 4 GB download (I suppose a feature upgrade). But the install of this package failed  with error 0x80072EE7.

Error code 0x80072EE7 stands for ERROR_INTERNET_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED, which means a server name or a server address could not be solved from Windows Update. In most cases third party firewalls or internet security suites are causing this issue and preventing access to Microsoft’s update servers.

You can check, whether proxy settings are wrong using Settings app in Windows 10 (or Internet options in other Windows builds). See my blog post Windows 10 V 1607 fails with Windows Update error 0x80D05001 how to check proxy settings. I recommend also file system integrity check (see Check and repair Windows system files and component store).

Windows screen get turned sideways–how to fix it?

Sometimes users get puzzled, because their Windows screen on a notebook get turned sideways. Why is that and how can this be fixed?

I read this question from time to time within forums. While a tablet pc can rotate the screen, depending on the device’s orientation, on notebooks this isn’t normally the case. Here some key combination pressed accidentally is the root cause for a screen get turned sideways.

In case, you get this, press  Ctrl + Alt + UP Arrow Key, or try Ctrl + Alt + and a different Arrow Key. Also a right click to an empty place on your desktop opens the context menu. Select Graphics Options > Rotation to open a page that allows to rotate the screen back.

Windows 10: Update error 0x80072EE2

Is Windows 10 throwing error 80072EE2 in an attempt to open Windows Store and download an app? Here are a few hints what to do to fix this issue.

Error code 0x80072EE2 flags an update error, that has been covered within this Microsoft article (but for Windows 7). According to Microsoft, the Update client could not connect to the update server. The recommendation is: Try it again later.

If that doesn’t help, the internet connection could be interrupted. Check, whether third party firewalls, internet security suites or VPN software could be the cause for this issue. Also wrong proxy settings may be a cause. You can check, whether proxy settings are wrong using Settings app in Windows 10 (or Internet options in other Windows builds). See my blog post Windows 10 V 1607 fails with Windows Update error 0x80D05001 how to check proxy settings.

Windows Update error 0x80073712

$

Sometimes Windows Update throws error 0x80073712 and the update install fails. Here are a few hints what to to and why this error occurs.

What error code 0x80073712 stands for?

Recently I stumbled upon this error within a post in Microsoft Answers forum. My first action was to have a look, what error code 0x80073712 stands for. This error code means ERROR_SXS_COMPONENT_STORE_CORRUPT, ‘The component store is corrupt.’ Searching the internet shows, that this error is known since Windows Vista. The root cause are damaged or missing files in component store (WinSxS). The component store in Windows sub folder WinSxS contains function, to handle updates and configure Windows. Microsoft has published this Technet article about component store.

How to fix ERROR_SXS_COMPONENT_STORE_CORRUPT?

The most interesting question is ‘how to fix error ERROR_SXS_COMPONENT_STORE_CORRUPT’? First of all, we can do a system file check:

1. Open an administrative command prompt window (enter cmd in search box and use Run as administrator in context menu).

2. Ender sfc /scannow in command prompt window and press enter.

I’ve discussed this step within my blog post Check and repair Windows system files and component store. In some cases sfc repairs a corrupted component store.

If you use Windows 7, you can run also System Update readyness tool (CheckSUR) – see Microsoft’s article Fix Windows Update errors by using the DISM or System Update Readiness tool. From Windows 8 onward, use DISM command to repair a component store(see Check and repair Windows system files and component store). If that doesn’t helps, try a repair installation using an inplace upgrade (install Windows again from a running Windows).

[German]Microsoft has re-released Update KB3150513 for das Windows 10 Anniversary Update (Version 1607) at May 1, 2017. It’s a compatibility update for this Windows build.

I’ve addressed update KB3150513, which is available for several Windows versions within my April 2017 article Windows compatibility update KB3150513. According to Microsoft,

this update provides the latest set of definitions for compatibility diagnostics that are performed on the system. The updated definitions will help enable Microsoft and its partners to ensure compatibility for all customers who want to install the latest Windows operating system. Installing this update also makes sure that the latest Windows operating system version is correctly offered through Windows Update, based on compatibility results.

The English Microsoft web site covers the revision date May 1, 2017. Microsoft has changed the files Appraiser.sdb, Appraiser_data.ini and Appraiser_telemetryrunlist.xml. Prerequisite for this update is cumulative update KB4013429 from March 2017. I haven’t receive this update within a VM test machine. But it’s possible to download this update for Windows 10 V1607 and Windows Server 2016 via Microsoft Update Catalog.

Windows 10: Update error 0x80240437

$

Some Windows 10 users are receiving an update error 0x80240437 installing an update via Windows Update or using Windows Store to update an app. Here are a few hints how to solve this issue.

I stumbled upon this error the first time within this Microsoft Answers forum thread. A user wrote, that Windows 10 Version 1703 (Creators Update) terminates update installs with error code 0x80240437.

Searching the web leads to the recommendation, to check Windows for system file integrity (as I has shown within blog post Check and repair Windows system files and component store. But this won’t work in Windows 10 Version 1703 (see my notes below).

What does error 0x80240437 stands for?

I mentioned some details within this Microsoft Answers forum thread. Error 0x80240437 stands for WU_E_PT_SECURITY_VERIFICATION_FAILURE (see also my blog post Windows: How to decode update 0x8024…. errors). There is a problem with authorization of update service. Maybe Windows component store is damaged, maybe something else is broken.

Windows 10 V1703: We can’t run dism to repair component store

The best attempt will be, to use the instruction given within the blog post Check and repair Windows system files and component store. Unfortunately, Windows 10 V1703 has been shipped with damaged system files, so dism fails with an error 0x800F081F.

A possible workaround could be my blog post Windows 10 V1703: Fix for DISM error 0x800F081F to resolve the broken manifest issue. And after the image has been fixed, use dism to repair Windows component store.

Reset Windows Update store

If a check and repair of Windows component store doesn’t help, try to reset Windows component store. Many users will us Microsofts Windows Update trouble shooter latestwu.diagcab (see Windows 10: New update troubleshooter app and site). If that didn’t work, try the steps below:

1. Open an administrative command prompt window (enter cmd in search box and use context menu command Run as administrator).

2. Execute the commands listed below.

net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits

The rename folder C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution to SoftwareDistribution.old and also folder catroot2 to catroot2.old. Then restart Windows and try Windows Update again.

Take care of your Antivirus software

Error 0x80240437 can also be caused by wrong date, time or time zone. Also third party firewalls, antivirus products and VPN software has been identified as a root cause.

Within this US Microsoft Answers forum thread a user reported, that Kaspersky security products may cause this behavior and suggested how to solve the issue.

Reset Windows Store

If error 0x80240437 occurs during app install from Windows Store, try to reset store (cache). Press Windows+R and enter wsreset.exe into the Run dialog box. This clears the Windows Store cache. Also re-registering manifest files via PowerShell has been proposed, and I read, that network adapter problems has been identified as a root cause.

Windows 10 V1703: Activation, updates or store downloads ends with error 0x80070057

$

Windows 10 Creators Update is causing a mysterious error on some machines. After upgrading to Windows 10 Version 1703 or after a clean install, activation, updates and store downloads fails with error 0x80070057.

Error 0x80070057 stands for ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER and has been discussed within several blog posts. A blog reader pointed me recently to a German Microsoft Answers forum thread, A user was facing serious trouble after upgrading to Windows 10 Creators Update. It seems that Windows Update was broken in build 15063.138. Each update install ended with error 0x80070057.

In normal cases it’s a good idea to repair Windows Update store using the update trouble shooter (see also). But this attempt wasn’t successful at all.

The troubleshooter reports some fixes (see screenshot above). But no success to fix error 0x80070057.

A known issue on INTEL NUCs

If this error occurs on INTEL NUCs, it’s a knows issue. The case has been discussed for Windows 10 Insider Previews within this Microsoft Answers forum thread

  • A user claims, that Windows Update was broken and ends always with error 0x80070057.
  • Also Windows Store downloads are broken, because Windows returns error 0x80070057.

The user tried to do a clean install of Windows 10 Creators, but failed to activate Windows 10 V1703. Windows returned also error code 0x80070057. I’ve seen a similar error here. After going back to Windows 10 Anniversary Update, the issue was solved. The user wrote, that the issue was detected on a Intel NUC 5i5RYH.

It seems, that Intel NUCs doesn’t have a serial number within its BIOS, so Windows activation fails. A user describes some steps to fix this issue. Currently it seems we have the following situation with INTEL NUCs.

  • The error 0x80070057 occurs, independently of a clean install or an update. Also build 15063.0 up to build 15063.14 causes this error.
  • On Intel NUC 5i5RYH or on Intel NUC5i3RYK a BIOS-Update (BIOS 0362) should help.

A BIOS update doesn’t helps on Intel NUC DN2820FYKH, while Windows 10 V1703 runs on Intel NUC D34010WYKH without a problem.

  • PC Reset via Settings > Update & security > Recovery will not work on non-English Insider Preview builds.
  • Some Insiders have reported seeing this error ‘Some updates were cancelled. We keep trying in case new updates become available’ in Windows Update. See this forum post for more details.
  • Surface 3 devices fail to update to new builds if a SD memory card is inserted. The updated drivers for the Surface 3 that fix this issue have not yet been published to Windows Update.
  • Navigating to Settings > Update & security > Windows Update may crash Settings app. You can simply re-open the Settings app again and it should work again.
  • Navigating to Settings > Personalization > Lock screen may crash Settings app.
  • Outlook 2016 may hang on launch due to an issue where the spam filter gets stuck reading the Outlook Data File and the UI waits indefinitely for it to return. We’re investigating.Â
  • Your PC may hang when shutting down the PC.
  • In certain cases, Start may fail to launch but launches normally on the second try.

Windows 10: IE 11 doesn’t show JPEG images

Internet Explorer 11 has an issue in Windows 10 (current Insider Builds 16170 or 16184): The browser don’t display jpeg image files within a web page – only placeholders are shown.

I was pointed to that issue from a reader of my German blog. He contacted me early in April 2017 and pointed out:

I’ve installed a dual boot system with Windows 10 Insider Preview Builds 15063 and 16170. In Build 16170 IE11 cant display image files (see screenshot).

The blog reader tested a clean install and an update install, both versions has this issue. Because Edge showed the websites with all images, it could not be a broken file type association. During writing this blog post, I found this Microsoft Answers forum post claiming the same thing. But my blog reader came recently with a solution.

1. Click in IE window to the settings icon and select Internet options in settings menu.

2. Go to Advanced tab and check Use software rendering instead of GPU rendering unter Accelerated graphics.

After closing the tab via OK, the browser should display also jpeg images. An hint for this solution has also given here at Microsoft Answers forum thread.

What’s new for Edge in Windows 10 Enterprise V1703?

$
0
0

Windows 10 Creators Update contains a few improvements in Microsoft’s Edge browser for enterprises. Microsoft has detailed these improvements within a blog post.

Microsoft has released Windows 10 Creators Update last month and since May 2, 2017, ISO build of Version 1703 are available in Volume License Center (see the article Windows 10 Enterprise v1703 is available on Volume Licensing Service Center from TheWindowsClub). So enterprises are able to switch to this new Version 1703.

Within the article Improvements for Enterprises in Microsoft Edge on the Windows 10 Creators Update, dated May 4, 2017, the Microsoft Edge Team outlines detailed, what’s new in Microsoft Edge. There are new policies that support key management scenarios, enabled by Mobile Device Management (MDM), Microsoft Intune, and Group Policy.

Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer provide the ability to seamlessly switch from one to the other, based on the site you’re loading. This can be configured via policies. It’s also possible to disable Adobe Flash via Group Policy. Further details may be found within Microsoft’s blog post. (via)

How many users are working with Windows 10 every day?

$

0

It has been a speculation, how many users are working with Windows 10 on a daily base. We have hat figures how many systems has been upgraded to Windows 10, and we have a monthly statistic of OS use on desktop systems. Now Microsoft has published new data.

The data from netmarketshare.com sees for end of April 2017 Windows 7 at 48.50%, and Windows 10 at 26.28% on desktop computers. Windows XP is used on 7.04% of all systems, while Windows 8.1 remains on 6,96% of all computers.

In August 2016, Microsoft claimed that 400 million Windows 10 systems has been activated (see ZDNet.com). But activation isn’t “using Windows 10 on devices”. According to an interview with Bloomberg Tech (video), Microsoft’s Yusuf Mehdi confirms: Windows 10 is being used by 300 million users every day.

Windows 10 has been doing great. It’s been many months sine we reported we had 400 million monthly active users, but 300 million+ use it every day for 3 and a half hours. It’s the fastest adoption in corporation we’ve ever seen, and we’re seeing great deployment on that. We couldn’t be more thrilled with the progress on Windows.

In other words: Windows 10 is free fro most users – many, many users of Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 has been forced between August 2015 and Juli 2016 to upgrade to Windows 10. But 100 million users (at minimum) are not using Windows 10 on a daily base – or has downgraded to previous Windows version. A success story? What’s your opinion? (via)

Windows 10: Updates KB3150513 and KB4015219 are back

$

[German]Microsoft has re-released Updates KB3150513 and KB4015219 for Windows 10. It seems, that some users are running into trouble with these updates. Here are a few details.

Update KB4015219 for Windows 10 Version 1511

I have mentioned update KB4015219 within my blog post Windows 10: security updates April 11, 2017. Now this update is shown in Microsoft Update Catalog with a new release date May 4, 2017. More details are not offered. A user released a comment within my German blog that update KB4015219 exchanges update KB4016636.

I found this thread, where a user had trouble installing an old version of this update. But I’m not sure, whether this is the reason for re-release.

Update KB3150513 for Windows 10 Version 1607

Update KB3150513 is the ‘Latest compatibility definition update for Windows’. Microsoft writes:

This update provides the latest set of definitions for compatibility diagnostics that are performed on the system. The updated definitions will help enable Microsoft and its partners to ensure compatibility for all customers who want to install the latest Windows operating system. Installing this update also makes sure that the latest Windows operating system version is correctly offered through Windows Update, based on compatibility results.
This update may not be offered concurrently to all platforms. It will be available only to platforms for which there are new definitions available.
This update has prerequisites.

An update, some users don’t like to install due to telemetry works. This updates has been re-released at May 2, 2017, see Windows 10 Version 1607: Update KB3150513 re-released. Microsoft has changed the files Appraiser.sdb, Appraiser_data.ini and Appraiser_telemetryrunlist.xml.

Is update KB3150513 are causing Outlook 2016 issues?

At Askwoody I found this post (I’m in contact with Woody Leonhard to exchange information). A user wrote:

Writing a quick thank you note for your article titled “Mystery update KB 3150513 makes yet another reappearance”.

It started yesterday afternoon when I couldn’t open Outlook 2016. After looking around a bit today on both my computer and the web, I noticed a new update that downloaded yesterday morning. Googling for help about the error that was showing on my system, “Cannot start Microsoft outlook. Cannot open the outlook window. The set of folders cannot be opened”, found no relief. But then, I came upon your aforementioned article, put two and two together, saw that I didn’t want this update on my computer and quickly uninstalled the update and voila! Outlook works. YaY!

So, I’m writing this for two reasons: 1st to say thank you for your article and blog that, unbeknownst to you until now, pointed me in the right direction to be able to once again use outlook and 2nd – in case you see others having this same issue, perhaps this bit of information from my experience will help them too before experiencing too much frustration.

In short: this user was facing the issue, that Outlook 2016 won’t open after installing this update. After uninstalling update KB3150513, Outlook 2016 works again. Searching the web I found some reports with issues in Outlook search, with printers and so on. WindowsReport.com has compiled this list of (older) issues. Don’t know, if those issues are still valid for the re-released version of this update. Maybe it’s simple coincidence that issues occur after installing this update. Any additional thoughts/experienced? Thx to Leon for some tips.
